For the 6th Suzhou-Jinji Lake Biennale 2023, Joana Vasconcelle presents the more intimate works Blue Moon and Cherry Bomb. These works feel both familiar and unfamiliar to the viewer, as the artist uses traditional Portuguese methods such as knitting and crocheting to cover the animal sculptures with colorful embroidery, lace, crochet and quilting. Through her own characteristic humor, Joana Vasconcelle brings light and joy to the viewer. By inviting the viewer into her baroque and light world of art through knitting, Joanna Vasconcelle also pays tribute to women and their needlework in this way. Her work is a celebration of color, form, and texture, leaving the viewer with a sense of the beauty of simplicity.
