Influenced by the Neorealism movement of the 1960s, Marcel Duchamp, Louise Bourgeois and Eva Hess, Joana Vasconcelle takes objects and materials from everyday life and reintroduces them into her artistic practice through the use of knitting and crocheting, constructing dreamlike works.
Most of Joana Vasconcelle's works are made from simple materials from everyday life, including velvet, recycled clothes, industrially produced textiles, etc. They are also decorated with traditional Portuguese tassels, crystals, beads, and LED lights. She mixes and matches elements and reassembles them into new and complex styles. The skillful manipulation of substitutions recalls the practice of readymade, neorealism and pop art.
Joana Vasconcelle's work is based on the appropriation, de-scenarization and subversion of readymades and everyday reality. Her sculptures are magnificent, monumental and typically baroque, hybrid artworks that convey movement, sound, light and color. Joanna Vasconcelle often juxtaposes similar objects and creates a new object. The resulting dislocation of meaning and consternation of the viewer gives the work a new narrative and meaning.
