Born in 1954 in Washington, D.C., USA. He is regarded as "the top Chinese playwright nowadays" and "the leading Asian theater director". He taught at the Taipei National University of the Arts for more than twenty years and was the founding director of the School of Drama. He was a professor at Stanford University and a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, California Institute of the Arts, and the Shanghai Theater Academy. He is currently the Artistic Director of Shanghai's Shang Theater and Taipei's Performance Workshop, the founder of Shang Theater Hall, and the initiator, permanent chairman, and chairman of the jury of the Wuzhen Theater Festival. Since 1984, more than 40 theater productions, including "That Night We Talked Crosstalk," "Secret Love for Peach Blossom Garden," "A Village on Treasure Island," the ultra-long drama "Like a Dream" and "Once Upon a Time," have had an impact all over the Chinese-speaking world.
