Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, founder and principal architect of Very Architecture. He studied in China and the United States and received his Master of Architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. He has been practicing in China since 1992, and founded Very Architecture in 1993 in the United States with Ludwig Ludwig. He has received numerous awards, such as the UNESCO Prize for Contribution to the Arts in 2000, the Academy Award for Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006, the 2016 China Architecture Media Award for Achievement in Practice, and the 2020 ArchDaily China Architecture of the Year Award. He has taught at several architecture schools in the U.S. and China, and was the Chair of the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2005-2010. He was a jury member of the Pritzker Architecture Prize Selection Committee in 2011-2017.
