Born in Brussels, Belgium, Marcel Brodeur (1924-1976) was a poet, filmmaker, and visual artist. He has been a member of the Surrealist group since 1945 and has dabbled in journalism, film and poetry. After struggling through 20 years of poverty as a poet, he decided to become an artist in 1963 and began to create his own art.

As a pioneering conceptual artist, Marcel Brodeur subscribes to the irony and self-questioning put forth by Marcel Duchamp and the practice of using art for the mind rather than the eyes. Brodeur's artwork is highly literary and tongue-in-cheek.

Marcel Brodeur's artwork greatly advanced conceptual art in the United States and Europe and had a profound impact on the global art world for the next 40 years. His work has been selected for Documenta in Kassel on numerous occasions.
