Born in Beijing in 1958, he graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Beijing Film Academy. He is a Chinese film and television director, screenwriter and producer, member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and member of the Committee of Culture, Literature, History and Learning. He has directed such films as "That Mountain, That Man, That Dog", "Blue Love", "The Life Show", "Warmth", "Autumn's White Flower", "The Great Tang Xuanzang", etc. He has won the Best Film Award at the Golden Rooster Awards, the Best Director Award at the Golden Rooster Awards, the Outstanding Director Award at the Huabiao Awards, the Outstanding Feature Film Award, the Grand Prix de la Publicité at the Montreal International Film Festival, the Golden Kirin Award for the Best Film at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and the Best Director Award at the Golden Screen Award in the United States.
